What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma (“five actions”) is Ayurveda’s classical cleansing and rejuvenation programme. It aims to clear ama (metabolic waste), restore agni (digestive fire) and balance the three doshas: Vata (air and movement), Pitta (heat and metabolism) and Kapha (structure and moisture). It is done in three phases: Purva Karma (preparation), Pradhana Karma (main cleansing) and Paschat Karma (recovery).
Unlike a spa package or a juice cleanse, Panchakarma is a supervised medical-style protocol. The therapies, herbs, diet and duration are chosen for your body type and current health, which is why a consultation always comes first.
The 3 phases of Panchakarma, explained
Every genuine programme follows this order. Skipping preparation or recovery is the most common reason a “detox” feels harsh or fades quickly.

Purva Karma: Preparation
Snehana (oleation) uses medicated ghee taken internally plus daily Abhyanga oil massage to loosen fat-soluble toxins.
Swedana (herbal steam or sudation) opens the channels and liquefies toxins so they can move towards the gut.
Diet is light and you may feel heavy or tired. This is normal.
Pradhana Karma: Cleansing
Your physician selects one or more of the five therapies below. Each is performed under supervision, with rest and monitored meals between sessions.
Not every guest needs all five. Overdoing it is a red flag, not a bonus.
Paschat Karma: Recovery
A graded diet (samsarjana krama) rebuilds digestion step by step, with rasayana herbs, rest and lifestyle guidance.
You leave with a written diet and daily-routine plan for your dosha so results last at home.
The five Panchakarma therapies
Here is what each therapy is, who it is typically considered for, and what guests experience. Final selection is always made by the physician.

Vamana: Therapeutic Emesis
What: Herbal preparations induce controlled, supervised vomiting that clears excess Kapha from the chest and stomach.
Considered for: congestion, heaviness, sluggish digestion, Kapha-type imbalance.
Experience: one prepared day, then a morning session and a rest day. Not suitable for everyone.
Virechana: Therapeutic Purgation
What: Herbal laxatives clear Pitta accumulated in the liver, gallbladder and small intestine.
Considered for: acidity, skin flare-ups, heat-type imbalance, digestive sluggishness.
Experience: a day of bowel movements under guidance, then a light diet.
Basti: Medicated Enema
What: Warm herbal oil (Anuvasana) or decoction (Niruha) given as an enema. Ayurveda calls Basti the foremost Panchakarma therapy.
Considered for: constipation, dryness, joint stiffness, Vata-type imbalance.
Experience: usually given as a course over several days.
Nasya: Nasal Therapy
What: Medicated oil administered through the nostrils after a gentle facial massage and steam.
Considered for: blocked sinuses, head heaviness, stress held in the neck and shoulders.
Experience: short daily sessions of about 20 minutes.
Raktamokshana: Blood Purification
What: A classical procedure for blood-related and Pitta conditions, using leech therapy or venesection.
Note: offered only when clinically indicated and legally permitted. Many retreats leave it out, and so do we by default.
Shirodhara, Kati Basti & more
Shirodhara: a warm oil stream over the forehead for deep calm.
Kati / Janu / Greeva Basti: warm oil pooled over the lower back, knees or neck.
Pizhichil, Patra Pinda Sweda: rich oil and herbal-bolus therapies used between phases.

Panchakarma FAQs
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma means “five actions”: Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. It is an Ayurvedic cleansing programme in three phases: preparation (Purva Karma), main cleansing (Pradhana Karma) and recovery (Paschat Karma).
How many days of Panchakarma do I need?
Classical practice recommends 14 to 21 days for a complete cycle. A 7-day programme starts the process with preparation and gentler therapies. Your physician sets the final duration after consultation.
Is Panchakarma safe for everyone?
No. Pregnancy, serious heart, kidney or liver conditions, recent surgery, severe weakness and some medications need medical review first. Share your full history so our physician can adapt or decline procedures.
What is the best time for Panchakarma in Rishikesh?
February to April and September to November have mild weather and suit most guests. Programmes run year-round, with winter and monsoon plans adjusted by the physician.
What does a Panchakarma retreat cost?
Cost depends on duration, room type and therapies prescribed. We give a transparent all-inclusive quote after your free consultation, with no hidden charges.
Will I do yoga during Panchakarma?
Yes, but gentle. Light asana, pranayama and meditation support the detox. Intense practice is reduced because the body is conserving energy.
Do you arrange airport pickup and visa support?
Yes. We arrange private transfers from Delhi airport to Rishikesh and can provide an invitation letter to support your Indian e-visa application.
