What is Vamana therapy?
Vamana is one of the five Panchakarma cleansing procedures in Ayurveda. It is a medically supervised, planned therapeutic emesis that aims to expel aggravated Kapha dosha and accumulated ama from the stomach and upper digestive tract. Ayurveda considers it the principal treatment for Kapha, because the stomach and chest are Kapha’s main seat.
Vamana is never done on its own or in a single day. The body is first prepared for several days so that Kapha moves towards the stomach, and it is followed by a graded recovery diet.
Types of Vamana
Shodhana Vamana
The planned form described above: full preparation, then emesis, then recovery diet. This is what a wellness retreat offers, and it suits long-standing Kapha-type imbalance.
Sadyovamana
Immediate emesis without the preparation phase, used in acute situations such as toxin ingestion. This is a hospital decision, not a retreat service, and we do not offer it.
Minor, moderate, major
Classically graded by the number of bouts: about 4, 6 or 8. Your physician aims for the level that matches your strength, not the maximum.
What is Vamana classically used for?
Vamana is classically indicated for Kapha-dominant or Kapha-Pitta conditions. Guests usually consider it for the following, always alongside appropriate conventional care for diagnosed illness:
Respiratory & sinus
Recurrent congestion, chronic cough, allergic tendencies and sinus heaviness.
Skin
Certain chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and urticaria, as part of a longer plan.
Weight & metabolism
Sluggish digestion, heaviness and Kapha-type weight gain, combined with diet and lifestyle.
Seasonal reset
A spring cleanse to prevent seasonal Kapha build-up, and preparation before rejuvenation (Rasayana) therapies.
Vamana procedure: the full timeline
Here is the sequence a physician follows. Days vary with your digestion and how you respond to oleation.

| Stage | Days | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Assessment | Day 1 | Pulse and constitution reading, history review, contraindication check and any tests your doctor advises, such as blood work or an ECG. |
| 2. Deepana–Pachana | 1–3 | Digestive herbs kindle agni and digest ama so the body can take oleation properly. |
| 3. Snehapana | 3–7 | Medicated ghee taken each morning in gradually rising doses until the signs of proper oleation appear. |
| 4. Abhyanga + Swedana | 1 | Full-body oil massage and herbal steam to liquefy Kapha and move it towards the stomach. A Kapha-stimulating meal is given in the evening, as per classical practice. |
| 5. Vamana day | 1 | Early-morning emesis under physician supervision (details below). |
| 6. Samsarjana Krama | 3–7 | Graded diet that rebuilds digestion, with rest and follow-up review. |
What happens on Vamana day
Checks & comfort
You sleep well, the previous meal is digested, and bowels and bladder are clear. Pulse, blood pressure, temperature and weight are noted before starting. Wear loose clothing.
Filling the stomach
You drink milk or sugarcane juice with honey and rock salt to protect the throat and ease the process, then take the emetic herbal preparation chosen for your strength.
Supervised emesis
After nausea and salivation, vomiting begins. You are seated comfortably with support, never forced to strain. Warm herbal water may be given to help if the bouts are slow.
Reading the signs
The physician watches the bouts, the material and your vitals. Kapha comes first, then bile (Pitta); the sight of bile is the signal to stop. Hydration is maintained throughout.
Signs of a proper Vamana
- Bouts start and stop on their own, without much strain or pain
- Kapha, then Pitta, are expelled in order
- You feel light, clear-headed and calm, with a quiet stomach
Signs of inadequate Vamana (no or few bouts, only the medicine coming out) mean the physician pauses and may repeat it after about a week. Signs of excess (blood, froth, weakness, dizziness) mean immediate stopping and supportive treatment. This is why supervision matters.
Recovery after Vamana: Samsarjana Krama diet
Right after Vamana your digestive fire is delicate. A wrong meal can undo the cleanse, so food is reintroduced in steps. Your physician adjusts this to your response.

| When | What you eat |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Manda: thin, warm rice water, plus ginger or cumin water |
| Day 2 | Peya, then Vilepi: thin to slightly thicker rice gruel with a little rock salt |
| Days 3–4 | Soft rice with thin, strained moong soup (Yusha) and a little ghee |
| Days 5–6 | Moong khichdi, steamed gourd, pumpkin or carrot, thin cumin buttermilk |
| Day 7+ | Gradual return to a normal sattvic diet |
For the first days avoid: cold food and drinks, fried and heavy food, curd and excess dairy, fermented items, junk food, caffeine, alcohol, loud talking, long travel, daytime sleep, sun and wind exposure. Rest, early nights and gentle pranayama help.

Vamana therapy FAQs
What is Vamana therapy?
Vamana is a classical Panchakarma procedure of medically supervised therapeutic emesis. After preparation with digestive herbs, medicated ghee, oil massage and steam, a physician gives emetic medicines to clear excess Kapha from the stomach and upper digestive tract.
Is Vamana painful?
It is uncomfortable rather than painful when done correctly. Guests feel nausea and then several bouts of vomiting over roughly 30 to 90 minutes, supervised by a physician, followed by rest and a feeling of lightness.
How long does the whole Vamana process take?
The emesis itself is one morning. Preparation takes about 5 to 11 days and recovery diet another 3 to 7 days, so a full cycle usually takes 10 to 18 days depending on your response.
Can I do Vamana at home?
No. Vamana needs screening, preparation and monitoring for dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and aspiration. Drinking salt water to vomit at home is not Vamana and can be unsafe.
What is the difference between Vamana and Virechana?
Vamana removes aggravated Kapha through the mouth by therapeutic emesis. Virechana removes aggravated Pitta through the bowel by therapeutic purgation. Your physician decides which, or both, suits you.
What is the best time of year for Vamana?
Classical texts recommend spring (Vasanta Ritu, roughly February to April) when Kapha naturally rises. It can be done in other seasons if the condition requires and the physician agrees.
How often can Vamana be done?
For seasonal cleansing it is usually done once a year. It should not be repeated soon after a previous Vamana, and the schedule for any condition is set by your physician.
What should I eat after Vamana?
Start with thin warm rice water and gruel, then soft rice with light moong soup, then khichdi, returning to a normal sattvic diet over about 7 days. This graded diet is called Samsarjana Krama.
